Ford has expanded its local Transit Custom model range, with the automaker introducing the Sport derivative to our shores. Here’s how much you can expect to pay for the sporty van.

Priced from R932 500, the (short-wheelbase) Transit Custom Sport ships with a four-year/120 000 km warranty, with the local arm of the Blue Oval brand adding that the sticker price includes a six-year/90 000 km optional service plan. Customers do, however, have the option of upgrading to service or maintenance plans spanning up to eight years or 165 000 km, while the warranty can be extended to seven years or 200 000 km.

As standard, the Transit Custom Sport, ahem, sports a derivative-specific body kit; a front grille, flanked by LED headlamps, incorporating a honeycomb motif; dual racing stripes and side decals; a roof-mounted rear spoiler; and “distinctive” matte-black, multi-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/60 rubber.

The sporty trim elements continue to the cabin, with the latest derivative in the firm’s local Transit Custom model range featuring blue accent stripes for the seats. Piano-black trim surrounds the van’s landscape-oriented, 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latter setup, which incorporated Ford’s familiar SYNC4 software, offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. A wireless smartphone-charging dock is included in the package, as is a 180-degree-view camera array. The 12-inch instrument binnacle houses an 8.0-inch, configurable driver’s display.

Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist are among the driver-assistance systems fitted as standard. Safety items include ABS, ESC, traction control, hill-start assist, and roll-over mitigation.

Exclusively available in short-wheelbase flavour, the Transit Custom Sport measures 5 050 mm nose to tail. The load compartment measures  2 602 mm in length and 1 392 mm in width.

The Transit Custom Sport employs the firm’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel. The single-turbo oil-burner produces 125 kW and 390 N.m of torque, the latter available from 1 750 r/min. The engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic cog swapper.
