As a reminder, both the high-performance premium-midsize sedan and estate employ the Bavarian brand’s familiar 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged inline-six, which has been tuned to produce 390 kW, 15 kW more than before. Torque output has remained the same, with the full complement of 650 N.m available as soon as the rev needle edges the 2 750 r/min marker up to 5 730 r/min. Power is sent to all four corners via the firm’s eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

According to BMW, these figures allow the (1 730 kg) all-paw sedan variant to complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds. Tipping the scales at 135 kg more, the M3 Competition Touring sprints to the three-figure marker in 3.6 seconds. Whereas both models’ top speed is, as standard, electronically governed to 250 km/h in certain markets, the SA-spec variants ship with BMW’s M Driver’s Package as standard. As a result, the maximum speeds are lifted to 290 km/h and 280 km/h for the sedan and Touring, respectively.

Stopping power is provided by a set of M Compound ventilated brakes — six-piston fixed items up front and single floating items at the rear. Carbon-ceramic items can be had at additional cost. The discs are sited behind front 19- and rear 20-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 275/35- and 285/30-size rubber.

According to the company, the M3 Competition sedan sips, on average, 10.2 L/100 km, while its Touring stablemate has a claimed average fuel consumption figure of 10.4 L/100 km.
