In the ninth month of 2024, an impressive 2 942 new Toyota Hilux bakkies were sold in South Africa, once again making the Hilux Toyota South Africa Motors’ best-selling product, despite a decrease in sales in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. However, according to naamsa, despite new-vehicle sales in the LCV segment suffering a decline of 11.6% in September 2024 (compared to the same month in 2023), the overall new-vehicle sales in South Africa experienced a (“modest”) decline of 4.1%, and the lingering effects of inflation, South Africa’s automotive industry remains optimistic and should show signs of recovery towards the end of 2024.

According to naamsa, “Since the decline in new-vehicle sales began in August 2023, expectations are rising that the new-vehicle market could see improvement for the remainder of the year, due to favourable economic conditions and the comparison to last year’s lower base levels.”

“Economic indicators in September 2024 showed positive trends, including the first interest rate cut in four years by the South African Reserve Bank, a stronger Rand, and easing inflation below the mid-point of the central bank’s target range. Lower fuel prices further bolstered consumer confidence, offering relief to household budgets.”
