Launched into Mzansi earlier this week, Mitsubishi reaffirmed that while the tale of the Triton in South Africa has previously featured the revered Colt nameplate, it intends to continue forging forward as a durable and reputable companion for those needing a versatile partner. Unlike the era of the Colt from the late 80s to early 2000s, the bakkie market has shifted significantly. Now, more than ever, configurability and customizability with bakkies will determine to some extent, their success. The all-new Triton is no exception and has 11 derivatives for prospective buyers to choose from across single and double-cab body styles. All are founded on the same new ladder frame chassis, which has a completely new body, engine and suspension affixed.

Buyers have a choice of Yamabuki Orange Metallic, Graphite Gray Metallic, Impulse Blue Metallic, Blade Silver Metalic, White Diamond and White Solid when configuring the bakkie but can further distinguish it with Mitsubishi’s widest selection of accessories on the model to date. Included are a B pillar protector, door handle protector, LED Scuff plate, fuel lid garnish (for the double-cab), roll bar, hood protector, fender flares bolted in, grille emblem, window deflector, a bedliner and a sports bar.

Over and above the standard GL and GLS models, Mitsubishi has ushered in the new Triton with an Xtreme, Athlete and Edition 46 specification pack. These are purely cosmetic packs and all employ the services of the 2.4-litre turbodiesel coupled to an automatic or manual transmission that sends power to all corners or the rear only. Included in the Xtreme are tailgate lock, tailgate assist, a black grill emblem, B-pillar foil, door handle protectors, side window deflectors, roof rails, a bin cover, headlamp, DRL and foglamp covers, mirror covers and rubberized load bin. The Xtreme conceals Dunlop AT5 265/65 R17 tyres and mag wheels within the flared fender arches and side door moulding. Mitsubishi adds that the Xtreme has been crafted for a customer who enjoys the duality of bold looks and venturing off of the beaten path on weekends.

Another iteration that caters to both urban and outdoor enthusiasts is the Athlete which features tailgate assist, tailgate lock, a silver grille emblem, B-pillar foil, door handle protectors, side window defclectors, an electric Securilid, roof rails, headlamp, DRL and foglamp covers, mirror covers, a rubberised bin and the Athlete decal. Like the Xtreme, it wears Dunlop AT5 265/65 R17 tyres and mag wheels and conceals them within differentiated fender arches finished in gloss.

The final iteration is an ode to the timeframe the Triton name has been in existence; the Edition 46. It features tailgate assist, tailgate lock, a silver grille emblem, B-pillar foil, door handle protectors, side window deflectors, under bumper tow bar, roof rails, a nudge bar, a rubberised load bin and an Edition 46 decal. Most noticeably, the bakkie features a black Canopeak canopy with a roof rack and kitchen/table set. The body sits 40 mm (optional) above the Dunlop 265/65 R18 AT3G WLT tyres and mag wheels. Mitsubishi adds that this would be the 4×4 enthusiast choice who desires off-road capability and practicality.
