Under the bonnet, the Shark 6 boasts a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine delivering 135 kW and 260 N.m of torque. While this engine powers the front wheels, its primary role is to recharge BYD’s ‘Blade’ battery system, a feature central to the Shark 6’s plug-in hybrid design.

Alongside this, the bakkie houses a pair of electric motors: one at the front producing 170 kW and 310 N.m and another at the rear, which generates 150 kW and 340 N.m. In total, the PHEV setup produces a whopping 321 kW and 650 N.m of torque. According to BYD, the Shark PHEV’s outputs allow the double cab to dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds, before topping out at 160 km/h.

Ironman 4×4 has tailored a suite of accessories for the Shark 6, allowing buyers to customise the vehicle for various off-road demands. These include a selection of bull bars, sports bars, tonneau covers, upgraded wheels, off-road tyres, and a lifted suspension system. A winch specifically made for the Shark 6’s high-voltage setup is still in development.

As the Shark 6 hits the Australian market, it raises further anticipation for the newcomer’s introduction to our shores, where, when it arrives, it will be the most powerful bakkie in SA.
