China’s Electric Xiaomi SU7 Snatches Sedan Record at Nürburgring

This time places the electric sedan firmly at the forefront of high-performance electric vehicles, surpassing previous records for production-based four-door and electric models. A video released by Nürburgring officials showcases the Xiaomi prototype’s exceptional lap, which featured an unexpected twist: onboard footage reveals that the car appeared to lose some power around the 4:15 mark. Nevertheless, the SU7 Ultra maintained its pace, ultimately completing the lap in a record-setting time.

According to Xiaomi, Nürburgring’s team scheduled a testing window for the 28th of October, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. After final track inspections and tyre preparations were completed, the SU7 Ultra prototype took to the track at 11:50 a.m., crossing the finish line just before noon. By 7:50 p.m. that evening, Nürburgring officials confirmed the remarkable lap time of 6:46.874.

While Xiaomi’s run with the SU7 Ultra falls into the “Prototypes and Pre-Production” category rather than an official production record, it signals the carmaker’s ambitious plans. The prototype’s time bested the 7:07.55-minute lap record previously held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, with Xiaomi signalling its intent to challenge production records with the final version of the SU7 Ultra.

Looking forward, the production variant of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is expected to reach a top speed of 349 km/h and produce 1139 kW, with aerodynamics designed to generate up to 628 pounds of downforce. With a performance like this, Xiaomi’s production car may very well join the elite sub-seven-minute club at the Nürburgring.
