At a recent media conference, held in Gauteng, Renault South Africa for the first time, showcased the new Duster (seen here donning the ‘Dacia’ badge) on local shores. In addition, though the automaker remains tight-lipped about some details, the company has revealed a few key details of the third generation, which is scheduled to officially launch here in March 2025.

So, what has the local arm of the French firm revealed so far? Well, for starters, the SA model range will comprise a trio of derivatives, each of which employing a mild-hybrid petrol engine. Indeed, the box-fresh Duster has ditched the outgoing iteration’s characterful 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel unit, which produced up to 80 kW and a healthy 250 N.m of torque, for a 1.2-litre turbocharged powertrain running on unleaded.
Local power and torque outputs have yet to be announced. However, the manufacturer did mention that it mimics that of the European-spec models. As such, a fair bet would be that, in SA, the three-cylinder engine will produce 95 kW and 230 N.m, the former and latter of which available from 4 500 r/min and 1 750 r/min, respectively.

Front-wheel- and four-wheel-drive models will again be available, with the 4WD derivative exclusively equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. The self-shifter makes do with the same number of cogs.
Based on Renault’s CMF-B platform, the new Duster’s wheelbase (2 657 mm) is 17 mm shorter than its forebear’s, while the bodywork measures 4 343 mm (up 2 mm) in length and 1 813 mm (up 9 mm) in width. The height has also increased (up 131 mm). Compared to its predecessor’s approach angle of 30 degrees, the new Duster’s is 31 degrees. The departure angle has remained the same at 36 degrees (for the 4WD version). The 4WD model’s ground clearance is rated at 217 mm, while the two-wheel-drive variant has a ground clearance of 209 mm. The braked towing capacity is 1 500 kg.
Stepping inside, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage, with the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-enabled unit sited in the centre of the dashboard. A digital driver’s display can be found in front of the multifunction steering wheel.
