Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale Reimagined as Perfect Modernisation of Original

The 33 Stradale has been a frequent talking point in the motoring world, scooping up supercar and design awards but a group of designers have prepared a Visione concept which they believe more closely resembles the original. 33 Stradale

The Alfa Romeo Stradale 33 Visione was born as a contemporary homage to the iconic 1967 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale which was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever made and for the time was capable of brisk performance from its mid-mounted V8 motor. Nearly 60 years later, the Italian automaker embarked on a project to reimagine the model and has recently commenced customer delivery of this modernised version. Unlike the original, however, this boasts either an EV powertrain or a V6 but will be limited to only 33 units with what can only be imagined as an eye watering price tag. To much fanfare, this modernised iteration has been a resounding success, scooping several awards for design and performance vehicles.

A collaboration between German-based automotive designers and 3D modellers wanted something more though. Andrea Castiglione conceived the Visione project for the 33 Stradale and further developed in conjunction with Steffen Hess, Marco Zafferana, Christian Schütz AESTITUT and Sergio La Gattuta. Starting off the rationale, the team explains that the motoring world is living in an era of ever-fast cars with over-exaggerated styling features, robbing the end user of the purity of beauty that the original 33 Stradale was abundantly endowed with.

Proportions were key and the team here focused on keeping it as honest to the original as possible. The silhouette, like the original and Alfa Romeo’s modernised version is unmistakable while the greenhouse has retained many of the hallmarks from the antecedent. But, the project doesn’t only draw inspiration from the ’60s creation – the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, and the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupé Speciale also have design elements imbued in its details. The design also nods to the aeronautical realm, particularly the SM 79 Sparviero aircraft, evident in its sleek lines and aerodynamic profile.

Keeping with the details, the Visione retains the distinctive low-slung, curvaceous body of its predecessor, featuring butterfly doors and a prominent front grille that pays tribute to Alfa Romeo’s signature design language. There are modern touches like LED lighting and a refined interior equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The front end is unmistakably 33 Stradale but the rear boasts a wrap-around LED which breaks from tradition.

It is still just a concept created by some talented designers, but a closer look reveals intake trumpets (like the original) for eight cylinders placed next to each other hinting t what could have been a true and unadulterated modernisation of the iconic original…
