The year 2024 is well behind us, but we’ve been delving into the data to determine South Africa’s best-selling car brand. Here are the Top 10!
We revisited Naamsa’s vehicle sales data to analyse the top 10 best-selling brands for 2024. Our deep dive not only highlights the leading automakers but also reveals how their sales figures have shifted over time. By comparing trends from 2023 through to December 2024, we can see which brands have gained momentum and which have faced declines in an ever-changing market. The year-to-date data taken at the end of December 2024 looks like this.

- Volkswagen – 60 975
- Suzuki Auto – 59 574
- Ford – 32 766
- Hyundai – 30 797
- Isuzu – 23 290
- Nissan – 22 288
- Chery – 19 912
- Renault – 15 822
- Kia – 14 778
While some manufacturers experienced growth, others saw a decline in numbers. Toyota remained the best-selling brand in South Africa, though its sales dropped from 138 357 in 2023 to 124 435 units in 2024. Volkswagen held onto second place but saw a slight decrease, moving from 61 197 to 60 975 units. Suzuki, on the other hand, posted a significant increase, rising from 49 436 in 2023 to 59 574 in 2024, reflecting its growing popularity among budget-conscious buyers.

Ford continued its upward trajectory, increasing from 30 710 to 32 766 units, while Hyundai experienced a small decline from 31 713 to 30 797. Isuzu remained relatively stable, selling 23 290 units compared to 23 252 in the previous year. With the manufacture of the NP200 ceasing, it was Nissan that saw one of the biggest drops falling from 29 160 in 2023 to 22 288 in 2024. Renault followed a similar trend, declining from 21 703 to 15 822 units. Kia also struggled, with sales dropping from 19 086 to 14 778. Meanwhile, Chery continued its impressive growth, climbing from 16 102 in 2023 to 19 912 units in 2024, further cementing the rise of Chinese automakers in the local market.
Overall, the data highlights the growing influence of Chinese brands, while Toyota remains dominant. How do you think 2025 will play out?
