SVI has given the Jeep Grand Cherokee a B4+ armouring package which is done discreetly and favours new car buyers who will retain the factory 5-year/100 000 km warranty and maintenance plan remain intact for all standard Jeep components. Alongside the full backing by Jeep South Africa, SVI’s bespoke armouring components are separately covered by a 1-year/50 000 km warranty.
Janus Janse van Rensburg, head of the Jeep brand in South Africa, said the upgraded model adds another layer to the Grand Cherokee’s already impressive CV. “As our global flagship model and the most technologically advanced, luxurious and 4×4-capable Grand Cherokee yet, the fifth-generation version now stands apart for yet another reason: the local availability of expertly engineered ballistic protection.”
SVI’s B4+ protection means the Grand Cherokee is rated to withstand both handgun fire and the widespread AK-47 assault rifle, a step up from the standard B4 packages commonly fitted in anti-hijack conversions. Despite this extra muscle, the armouring remains visually undetectable to the casual observer.

The comprehensive package features custom-fabricated steel plating, lightweight composite materials, and 32 mm ballistic glass shaped to factory specifications. Firewall protection and an armoured rear bulkhead are also part of the deal, the latter even including a stealthy escape hatch behind the second-row seats. Total additional weight from the armouring materials comes to roughly 400 kg, though the standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 has no trouble handling the load. As standard, the Grand Cherokee weighs just over 2.1 tonnes and is capable of towing a braked 2 813 kg and 750 kg unbraked. This capability is courtesy of the 210 kW and 344 N.m which is channelled through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels.

The package also maintains the SUV’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, including those that rely on windscreen-mounted sensors. For practicality, the driver’s window can still be partially lowered to access ticket machines and biometric scanners. The cost for SVI’s Jeep-approved B4+ solution starts at R1 236 814 (excluding VAT and the cost of the base vehicle), with a build time of roughly three months. For those seeking protection against handguns rather than assault rifles, a standard B4 package is available for both the five-seater and the extended seven-seat Grand Cherokee “L”, priced from R833 684 (again, excluding VAT and vehicle cost).
