With the new Hilux’s international debut edging closer (reports suggest towards the end of 2025), reports about the ninth generation continue to surface, including leaks of the exterior and interior. However, now, more details have emerged – courtesy of documents that were submitted by Toyota to Australian government officials.
As reported by CarExpert, the document outlines how many derivatives will initially be available and, perhaps more noteworthy, model designations – the latter indicating which engines will be employed by the new-generation lineup.
In the document, the Japanese automaker has listed 16 models – all equipped with the firm’s familiar 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel powertrain in either “standard” or 48 V mild-hybrid format. So, in the documentation there’s no mention of the 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel motor or 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit, which reports have suggested will be employed by the new FJ Cruiser.
However, this Australian publication has also reported it’s been said the company is developing a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol powertrain for not only the Hilux but also for future GR models – new Hilux GR-Sport, perhaps?
A reports from Japan has also suggested the new Hilux will be slightly larger than the eighth generation, which we’ve driven in Legend 55 guise in August 2025. BestCar has stated the new Hilux’s bodywork is expected to measure 5 350 mm in length (up 25 mm) and 1 920 mm in width (up 20 mm), with the wheelbase remaining the same (3 085 mm).
Although Toyota has kept its cards close to its chest about the new Hilux’s official unveiling, reports have suggested the ninth iteration will be revealed at the 2025 Thailand Motor Expo, which takes place from 28 November to 10 December.
