VW ID. Buzz ‘a Must’ for South Africa

At the 2025 IAA Mobility, VW told CAR Magazine that the ID. Buzz all-electric bus is ‘a must’ for the South African market.

Volkswagen introduced the ID. Buzz in 2022. We sampled the German marque’s battery-electric bus in Germany in 2023; reporting back in our review that the company is “looking to introduce its portfolio of ID. products in South Africa with the ID. Buzz and ID.4 Pro”. Noteworthy, fleets of the former and latter were already undergoing testing in South Africa, with the Wolfsburg brand’s local arm joining forces with DHL to showcase the ID. Buzz and run it on a trial basis.

Speaking to Lars Krause, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Board Member of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, at 2025 IAA Mobility, Krause told CAR Magazine that the ID. Buzz is “a must” for our market. “For me, it’s a must. It’s a clear must that we enter the South African and also African market with the ID. Buzz. It is the electric LCV worldwide,” said Krause. “There is no car that really delivers so many emotions like the ID. Buzz. We have to bring it over to South Africa and to Africa as a whole.”

So, how many boxes are left to be ticked for the ID. Buzz to come to South Africa? Krause told us “not many”. “The Challenge is technical. We have to make sure reliability is completely given. This is why we are testing the car in these specific environments and road conditions, but also weather and climate conditions. We’ve already used this car in a test environment in South Africa with a strong partner, DHL. It is in daily use. That delivered very important information to us,” said Krause.

However, there is another reason for the ID. Buzz’ delayed arrival in South Africa – the latter relating to the absence of what Volkswagen’s head office deems adequate under floor protection on the vehicle to “cope” with our road conditions. The caveat is that the car has been approved for Australia, a market with as many, if not more, sections of gravel.
