Next Suzuki Swift Sport to be based on Toyota GR Yaris

Through its agreement with Toyota, the next-generation Suzuki Swift Sport will be based on the GR Yaris.

When the fourth-generation Swift was unveiled in 2024, Suzuki remained tight-lipped as to whether the latest iteration of its characterful hatchback will spawn a plucky Sport variant. Well, the Japanese automaker has now confirmed a new Swift Sport is in the works. However, perhaps the biggest news is that it will be based on the Toyota GR Yaris.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, as both manufacturers offer products based on existing models from each other’s portfolios. This includes the Suzuki Fronx-based Toyota Starlet Cross and the  European-based Toyota RAV4-based Suzuki Across. (the local Across is based on the Grand Vitara). As part of this agreement, the next Suzuki Swift Sport is now destined to based on a rather exciting Toyota product.

Although the Swift has been viewed as “off-limits” to Toyota, it seems the GR Yaris is at full disposal to Suzuki. As such, Suzuki will make use of the GR Yaris’ platform and powertrain for the next Swift Sport.

This means the next Swift Sport will be powered by Toyota’s 1.6-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 210 kW and 400 N.m of torque, and adopt an all-wheel-drive system — the latter paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

As a reminder, the current-generation Suzuki Swift Sport’s Boosterjet engine produces 103 kW and 230 N.m. The 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, which is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearbox, delivers power to the road via the front wheels only.

There’s no word on when the next-generation, GR Yaris-based Swift Sport will officially break cover, though it’s expected to become available in the coming year … 1 April 2027, perhaps?
