VW gives first glimpse of next Golf

VW has teased the next Golf, with the German marque releasing a shadowy image of the ninth generation’s silhouette.

Although an official release date for the ninth-generation VW Golf has yet to be announced, unofficial reports have suggested the new model will make its debut either in 2028 or nearer to 2030. However, while we wait for official word on the latter, VW has released a shadowy teaser image of the all-electric next iteration.

The emissions-free Golf will be underpinned by the carmaker’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will incorporate an 800 V electrical system. From what we understand, single- and dual-electric motor configurations will be available. The ninth iteration will likely also spawn GTI and R variants in the future.

While the ninth-generation Golf will be fully electric, and thus likely wear the ‘ID.’ badge, from what we understand, the current internal combustion (ICE) model will remain in production – the latter moving to Mexico in 2027, as reported by Automotive News Europe – and be sold alongside the ID. Golf, which will be produced in Germany. In addition, VW has vowed to keep the petrol-powered Golf GTI alive into the next decade.

As a reminder, locally, the updated eighth-generation Golf, which we evaluated for a road test in 2025, is currently available with the choice of two engine options – VW’s 1.4 TSI in the standard models and (EA888) 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol in the GTI, which we sampled for an exclusive first drive in SA in August 2025. However, as we reported in February 2026, the German marque’s local arm is “confident” the Mk8.5 Golf R will come to SA.

As a reminder, the Golf isn’t the only model in VW’s portfolio that will gain battery-powered propulsion, with the all-electric Polo and Polo GTI models having been announced for 2026 and 2027, respectively. (The SA-built Polo will remain in production into the next decade, however, as we reported in September 2025.) The company has also showcased its plans for an all-electric T-Cross with the ID. Cross Concept.
