In April 2026, VW’s ‘Polo’ nameplate entered a new chapter, with the Wolfsburg brand officially unveiling the first all-electric version of its popular compact hatchback. As we reported with the reveal of the ID. Polo, a GTI variant of the latter will be introduced to the lineup this year. Well, this performance-focused model has finally made its debut, with VW revealing the ID. Polo GTI.

The ID. Polo GTI is equipped with a single electric motor, which produces 166 kW and 290 N.m of torque – the latter delivered to the road via the front wheels. Compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) Polo GTI, which is exclusively built at the German marque’s Plant Kariega facility in South Africa, the emissions-free model is 19 kW more powerful. The ICE model is torquier, though, with its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol producing 320 N.m of twisting force. The (1 540 kg, claimed) ID. Polo GTI completes the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 6.8 seconds – one-tenth of a second slower than the (1 247 kg, claimed) ICE model – before topping out at 175 km/h (the ICE Polo GTI’s top speed is rated at 238 km/h).

The battery-electric Polo GTI’s e-motor is coupled with a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack – the latter serving up a claimed operating range of up to 424 km (WLTP) on a full charge. The NMC item can receive up to 105 kW at a DC fast-charging station. According to VW, a 10-80% DC charge takes about 24 minutes.

Stepping inside, the ID. Polo features a 10.25-inch configurable digital driver’s display, which includes Mk1 Golf-inspired instrumentation graphics for an old-school feel, and a 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Several GTI-specific elements are also present.

The VW ID. Polo GTI, which has not yet been confirmed for the SA market, is priced from “just under” €39 000 – the latter figure translating to R756 313.35 at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate. For comparison, the ICE Polo GTI is priced from R585 800.
