In a bid to bolster its local passenger-car portfolio, Tata Motors has confirmed the Osprey compact SUV, known as the Nexon overseas, will arrive in SA in the coming months. Along with the Sierra, the Osprey is one of 17 new Tata products set to arrive in our market over the next few years.
The Osprey is available with the choice of three engine options. The first comes in the form of a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, producing 85 kW and 260 N.m of torque. The latter, ‘Revotorq’ motor is mated with either a six-speed manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT) with the same number of cogs. The petrol variant employs the Indian automaker’s ‘Revotron’ 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol, developing 88 kW and 170 N.m. The turbo-triple can be had with either a five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed AMT, or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A ‘Revotron CNG Bi-fuel’ engine is also available in India. Coupled with a six-speed manual, the latter powertrain pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with a compressed natural gas (CNG) kit, and delivers 74 kW and 170 N.m.
The Osprey features LED headlamps and daytime-running lights. Inside, the Osprey is fitted with a two-spoke steering wheel, replete with an illuminated Tata emblem, ventilation for the synthetic leather front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system by Harman, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and Connected Vehicle technology via IRA 2.0, which allows owners to access and monitor their car using their mobile phones. Safety items include an electronic stability programme (ESP), six airbags, 360-degree surround-view camera supplemented by park distance sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. The five-seater compact SUV offers a claimed 382 litres of boot space.
Tata Osprey SA launch date
While local pricing and specifications have yet to be announced, Tata has confirmed the Osprey will launch in SA in the third quarter of 2026.
“Since returning to South Africa last year, we have enjoyed tremendous success, surpassing the goals we have set for ourselves and retailing more than 600 cars during the month of May. A variety of new model launches in the medium term are set to bolster and enhance that momentum and ensure that the brand goes from strength to strength in South Africa,” said Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for the distributor of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa.
