5 most affordable plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles in SA in 2026

We’ve rounded up the five most affordable plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) available in South Africa in 2026. See the list below…

5. Chery Tiggo 7 1.5T CSH Plug-in Hybrid Plus – from R619 900

Claiming fourth spot on the list is the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) in Plus specification, priced from R619 900. The new-energy SUV’s PHEV powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a single electric motor. The Tiggo 7 CSH is produces a combined system output of 265 kW and 310 N.m, delivered to the front axle via a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). On a full charge, the Tiggo 7 CSH’s 18.3 kWh battery serves up a claimed 93 km electric-only operating range. Chery claims a combined driving range of 1 200 km.

4. Geely E5 EM-i Aspire – from R599 999

Placing third, the Geely E5 EM-i Aspire is priced from R599 999. The Geely’s PHEV system pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with a single, front-mounted electric motor – the latter fed by an 18.4 kWh battery offering a claimed operating range of up to 105 km. The combined driving range is 943 km, the automaker says. The E5 EM-i produces combined power and torque outputs of 160 kW and 262 N.m.

3. BYD Sealion 5 Comfort DM-i – from R509 900

The previous most affordable PHEV in SA, the BYD Sealion 5 launched in our market in December 2025. The Sealion 5 is priced from R509 900 for the Comfort derivative. Fed by a 12.96 kWh battery, the Sealion 5’s single electric motor is mated with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. The setup produces a combined system output of 156 kW and 300 N.m. BYD claims a combined average fuel consumption of 5.2 L/100 km, translating to an operating range of just over 1 000 km from a full tank of fuel and battery. The electric-only operating range rated at up to 52 km.

2. Leapmotor B10 REEV – from R499 900

Introduced to the SA market in August 2026, the Leapmotor B10 REEV (range-extended electric vehicle) claims second spot on this list, with pricing for the two-strong model lineup kicking off at R499 900. The B10 REEV’s new-energy powertrain comprises a single, rear-mounted electric motor coupled with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine – the latter serving as a generator for the vehicle’s 18.8 kWh battery. The REEV setup produces 158 kW and 240 N.m.

1. BYD Atto 2 Comfort DM-i – from R449 900

Launched in SA in June 2026, the BYD Atto 2 – priced from R449 900 – is the most affordable PHEV currently available in our market. The Atto 2’s DM-i setup pairs a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with a single electric motor for a combined system output of 122 kW and 300 N.m. BYD claims a combined fuel consumption of 5.1 L/100 km and an electric-only operating range of 40 km from the 7.85 kWh battery pack.
