Fuel prices for South African motorists are now confirmed for September 2026, as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has announced for Wednesday. Both grades of petrol, 93 ULP/LRP and 95 ULP/LRP, will rise by R1.34 per litre. The price of diesel swung the opposite way than previously predicted, so it will now rise by R2.94 and R3.15 per litre for 0.05% sulphur (500ppm) and 0.005% sulphur (50ppm), respectively. The price of wholesale illuminating paraffin has an increase of R2.13 per litre.
Fluctuating oil prices have continued from geopolitical tensions. While the number of oil ships being allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz has increased slightly, the US is still imposing sanctions on Iran. Recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and ports have curbed Moscow’s crude exports, too. So, oil prices at the time of writing are $91 per barrel. Then, the SA government has also increased the slate levy, further adding to what you pay at the pumps.
