Announced at the 2026 Festival of Motoring, which takes place from 28-30 August at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, Changan South Africa is set to expand its Uni-S lineup with the inclusion of a hybrid (HEV) derivative. The new-energy Uni-S’s powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and front-mounted electric motor, producing combined outputs of 166 kW and 290 N.m of torque. The electric motor is mated with a ternary lithium battery pack. Changan claims an average fuel consumption of 4.0 L/100 km, which translates to a driving range of 1 275 km from a full, 51-litre tank of fuel.

The Uni-S HEV is distinguished from its petrol-only siblings, of which we sampled the flagship petrol-only model in April 2026, via a revised front grille. Five exterior colour options – white, black, Putty Grey, Shadow Grey, and Fluorite Grey – will be on offer, along with the choice of two interior trims: red and black.

The HEV variant will be available in two flavours: CL and CE. The former features leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, with the driver’s being six-way electrically adjustable, and 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone screen mirroring. The CL is also equipped with a 540-degree surround-view camera system. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane-keep assist are standard. CL grade is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels.

The CE flagship model features a 15 W wireless smartphone charging pad, eight-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof with rain-sensing auto-close function, and electrically operated tailgate. The front pews also gain memory functionality. CE spec also gains additional ADAS, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, reverse cross-traffic alert, and rear collision warning. CL trim rolls on 19-inch wheels.

While local pricing has yet to be announced, Changan has confirmed the Uni-S HEV will ship with a five-year/150 000 km warranty and five-year/90 000 km service plan. As a reminder, the (petrol-only) Uni-S range is priced from R389 900 to R469 900.
