Sporting a design that wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi movie, the BE 6 is under consideration for South Africa, Mahindra’s local arm revealed at the global debut of the SA-bound Lifestyler double-cab bakkie.

The BE 6 (‘BE’ for ‘Born Electric’) is available with the choice of eight equipment packages: One, Two, Three, Three+, Four, FE, FE Four, and Launch Edition. All models feature a single, rear-mounted electric motor.

The One and Two are exclusively available with a 59 kWh battery offering a claimed operating range of 548 km on a single, full charge. The Three can be had with either the latter or a larger, 70 kWh item serving up a claimed operating range of up to 651 km. The Three+ is available with either a 70 or 79 kWh battery. The Four, FE, FE Four, and Launch Edition are exclusively available with the 79 kWh battery pack. Mahindra says the largest battery on offer serves up an operating range of up to 683 km.

The 59, 70, and 79 kWh battery packs recharges from 20-80% in 20 minutes when plugged into 140, 160, and 180 kW DC fast chargers, respectively.

The BE 6 measures 4 371 mm in length and 1 907 mm in width. For comparison, this makes the BE 6 100 mm shorter and 74 mm wider than the GWM Ora 5. Standing 1 627 mm tall, the BE 6’s wheelbase spans 2 775 mm long. The ground clearance is rated at 207 mm. Mahindra claims a boot capacity of 455 litres, with an additional 45 litres available in the front luggage compartment, or ‘frunk’ (front trunk).

The BE 6 is equipped with a McPherson strut front/multilink rear independent suspension setup.

Stepping inside, the BE 6’s interior takes one of two forms, depending on the model. For example, the One features the firm’s ‘Halo’ layout with dual 31.24-inch displays, while the Two and Three+ ditches the F1-inspired halo design in favour of an arguably less sporty-looking centre console and three 31.24-inch displays.
