2027 Volkswagen Grand California Dune Special Edition revealed

Featuring a selection of adventure-minded items, Volkswagen has revealed the new Grand California camper van with the Dune Special Edition.

Based on the Crafter, Volkswagen has revealed the new Grand California camper van. This adventure-minded model’s interior features a fold-out dining area, compact kitchen, and a built-in shower. Hard-wearing Atami Bamboo surfaces and matching wood-effect flooring complete the cabin trim. Available as an option, the Off-Grid Package includes solar panels and two 40 Ah lithium-iron phosphate batteries. Specified with the latter kit, usable battery capacity is increased by 40%.

In addition, VW also introduced a Dune Special Edition, which features Ascot Grey exterior paintwork, black bumpers and 17-inch Lismore alloy wheels, and ‘Dune’ decals. Automatic LED headlamps with daytime-running lights improve visibility. Interior upgrades include Climatronic air conditioning and ambient lighting.

The Grand California’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces 120 kW and 410 N.m of torque – the latter delivered to the road via either a front-wheel drivetrain or 4Motion all-wheel drive. Both drivetrains are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Crafter-based Grand California is unfortunately not available in South Africa. Locally, the Crafter is only available in Bus and Panel Van configurations. However, while you can modify the former and latter for weekend getaways, you can also look to the second-hand market for a previous-generation Caravelle in California Coast guise, which is priced from around R1 million for 2019 models.
