Chery Tiggo X7 revealed and confirmed for 2027 South African launch

The Tiggo X7 has made its debut in Wuhu, China, with Chery confirming the new, adventure-focused SUV is heading to South Africa in 2027.

The Tiggo X7 is the first model in Chery’s adventure-focused new X-series portfolio. Compared to the existing Tiggo 7, of which the next generation was also showcased at the Wuhu-based event, the Tiggo X7 cuts an altogether boxier figure than its sibling. Including the latter, the Tiggo X7’s more imposing, squared-off front end — replete with a prominent grille, angular LED headlamp clusters housing sharp daytime-running lights, vertical fog lamp arrays, and a skid plate — lends the Tiggo X7’s exterior a rugged aesthetic. Keen-eyed readers will notice the duo of front recovery hooks. The Tiggo X7’s angular side mirrors, chunky door handles, and wheel-arch cladding add to the look. Yellow brake callipers are sited behind seven-spoke alloy wheels, finished in black. ‘Round back, vertical LED taillamps sit opposite a side and upwards opening tailgate. The lower bumper incorporates what looks like faux tailpipe housings.

While the Chinese automaker has yet to release powertrain details, we expect the Tiggo X7 will be available in both internal combustion engine-only — likely turbocharged petrol — and new-energy configurations. In fact, outlined in the presentation, the company noted the AI Energy Mode will be exclusive to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. So, a PHEV is on the cards. A selection of other driving modes, including a Crawl Control function, will also be available. ‘Daily’ modes include Eco, Comfort, and Sport, while ‘Outdoor’ modes include Sand, Mud, Snow, Rock, Mountain, and Water Wading. Chery noted the Tiggo X7 will offer a water-wading depth of up to 700 mm.

The Tiggo X7 will be offered with an all-wheel drivetrain, with Chery saying the new SUV will feature “enhanced” mechanical all-terrain capability. On this, the company has said the Tiggo X7 will offer over 200 mm of ground clearance, and 22-degree approach and 26-degree departure angles.

Chery Tiggo X7 South African launch date

Chery has confirmed the Tiggo X7 will launch in South Africa in the third quarter of 2027. The local model lineup, including specifications and powertrain options, and pricing is expected to be revealed closer to the SUV’s arrival in our market.

As a reminder, this isn’t the only new Chery product coming to South Africa in 2027. Indeed, in the first quarter of the year, the highly anticipated Grootman double-cab bakkie — which we’ve driven in China and has been confirmed for local production in South Africa — will make local landfall. The Tiggo V ‘transformable’ SUV/bakkie is also en route to our market. Of course, an array of new models from the carmaker’s sub-brands are also on their way here — the latter including the striking Omoda C4 compact SUV.
