Non FIA-homologated Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 55 is restriction-free race car

Image
No regulations mean that the five Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 55 planned for production can sing their brutish V8 tune while pushing out a maximum of 478 kW all for the cool price of €625 000 or R10,5 million. Image: Mercedes-AMG So what does it mean if it is not FIA-homologated? Simply put, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 55 won’t be able to compete in sanctioned FIA racing series or events but the five owners of this limited run model will receive their money’s worth in terms of performance and upgrades. Related: Mercedes-AMG GLE Edition 55 celebrates 55 years of AMG The first of which starts under the bonnet, with the 6,3-litre V8 under the bonnet pushing out 73 kW more than before and taking total ratings all the way up to 478 kW. In addition, the restrictive exhaust components like the silencer have been removed making the model bearing the three-pointed star on its bonnet sing an even more brutish tune.  On the outside, no restrictions on aerodynamics and weight mean that i...

Surging oil prices threaten to put a dent in expected fuel price decreases

Surging oil prices and the increased rand exchange rate threaten to put a “dent” in any expected price decreases in September.  Earlier this month, data from the  Central Energy Fund data   indicated that motorists could expect more fuel price decreases in September, but recent rises in both oil and the rand exchange rate could impact the reduction. As reported by  The South African , data showed that the would be a R2.63/l drop in the retail price of 95 octanes unleaded petrol, a R2.48 drop for 93 unleaded, and a R2.37 drop in the wholesale price of diesel in September. Here’s a look at the mid-month update: Petrol 95:  would drop by 260 cents per litre Petrol 93:  would drop by 244 cents per litre Diesel 0.05%:  would drop by 230 cents per litre Diesel 0.005%:  would drop by225 cents per litre Paraffin:  would drop by 193 cents per litre However, the rand has depreciated substantially in the week since those  figures were re...

The Bugatti Mistral is the famous W16 motor’s final swan song

Image
It’s the end of an era. The epitome position of the Bugatti nameplate has cemented itself as one of the most illustrious and exclusive automotive brands to date. The earth-shaking and astounding   W16 engine, an irreplaceable epithet to the badge itself, has come to an end. Its final resting place will be in the body of the recently unveiled Bugatti Mistral. Image: Bugatti Newsroom The Bugatti Mistal will be the last nameplate from the esteemed stable to receive the famed W16 motor and not only that, but the Mistral is Bugatti’s only roadster in the Chiron lineage . As the final appearance of the famed motor, it’s been paired with a car that encapsulates the idea of power, speed, and elegance. This open-top Chiron relative will only have 99 examples and will come with an asking price of 5 million euros (roughly R84 million) and is — unsurprisingly — already sold out. Although being a roadster variant of the Chiron, it forgoes guillotined A-pillars and instead uses a complete...

Czinger Hyper GT is almost a family car with its four-seat configuration

Image
With the introduction of one model, Czinger has quadrupled the amount of occupants that their cars can hold. This is the Czinger Hyper GT and it is a new design direction for the future of the California-based company.  Image: Czinger Introduced down the road from their headquarters to the masses of Monterey in California, Czinger teased two cars. The first being the four seat Hyper GT and the second being a high speed derivative of the 21C with the V Max nomenclature added onto the end. The former is the first four-seater, or anything more than a single seater for that matter, that Czinger has ever created. It illustrates the company’s novel design direction that we can have a hand at guessing will branch out into volume segments.  Image: Czinger Being such a bespoke automaker, we use the word volume with caution. In previous interviews, company founder Keven Czinger stated that the Hyper GT will be “A four-seater vehicle at a lower price. Higher volume, but still v...

McLaren Solus is a single-seat, track weapon akin to that of an F1 car

Image
Two-seat hypercars are possibly the most inflexible vehicles out there but they serve their intended purpose very well. For anything more, there are single-seaters which are even thinner and fewer inbetween but the McLaren Solus looks to offer this hardcore driving experience to 25 fortunate buyers. Image: McLaren There has been an introduction of certain single-seat track weapons over the past few years. The Czinger 21C comes to mind as one of the most recently introduced but unlike bespoke American hypercar, the McLaren Solus makes use exclusively of an ICE to push it forward, and quite a sizable one at that. Behind the centre mounted cockpit is a 5,2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine provided by Judd. While you may be reminiscing over some glorious 10 cylinder sounds right now, the fact that the McLaren Solus can push out 619 kW and 650 N.m doesn’t sound too bad, particularly when considering it only weighs exactly a ton.  This means that the 10 000 rpm capable motor ...

V12 Vantage Roadster the last of its kind and will be limited to 249 units

Image
Change is upon Aston Martin as the latest introduction into their portfolio will be the last of its kind. This V12 Vantage Roadster is the final of the V12 Vantages and it comes with a drop top and 515 kW of fossil fuel powered infamy. Image: Aston Martin Debuting at Pebble Beach over the weekend, the V12 Vantage Roadster will provide one last 12 cylinder swansong for 249 Aston Martin customers. Under the bonnet is the sizable 5,2-litre V12 borrowed from the hardtop version. A pair of twin-turbochargers mean that the car is capable of 515 kW and 753 N.m which is converted into propulsion via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission placed towards the rear of the car making it a transaxle.  Image: Aston Martin Despite the extra weight to handle the structural integrity of its foldable roof, the V12 Vantage Roadster can get to 100 km/h in as little as 3,5 seconds and continues onto a top speed of 322 km/h – although we wouldn’t recommend doing this with the top down. ...
