The rally bakkie variant of the double-cab Triton is equipped with a 2,4-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, generating 150 kW and 470 N.m of torque. To ensure the engine’s performance in the dusty terrain, a snorkel has been fitted. Power is transmitted through a six-speed manual gearbox, channelled through Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system and complemented by limited-slip differentials on both axles.

The truck’s suspension has been revised, featuring twin dampers at each corner, and the track width has been increased compared to the standard model. The bakkie rides on 17-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama Geolander tires with spares sitting in the revised bakkie bin.

Carbon-fibre components have been used for the hood, doors, and cargo bed, reducing weight and enhancing performance. The Triton bakkie’s appearance is further enhanced by a prominent bar on the A-pillar, opposite the snorkel. Inside, the truck has a stripped-down interior with a roll cage for added safety.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart’s director, Hiroshi Masuoka, expressed confidence in the Triton rally truck, stating that it has undergone more than 2 000 km of endurance testing in Japan and Thailand without encountering any major issues.

Debuting earlier this week, the road-going version of the Triton features an updated ladder frame that improves torsional rigidity by 60% while buyers can choose between double cab, club cab, and single cab body configurations.

Initially, the new Triton will be available for sale in Thailand, followed by a gradual rollout in other Asian markets. The Japanese market can expect to see the bakkie on sale in early 2024 and South Africa has been confirmed to receive it by Q2 of the same year adding to the fiercly contended bakkie segment locally.
