In conversation with German publication WirtschaftsWoche, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mercedes-Benz Group Ola Källenius has confirmed that the German marque will invest €14 billion — which, at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate amounts to a whopping R271 541 620 000 — into the development of high-tech internal combustion technology amid the seeming decline in the demand for all-electric, battery-powered vehicles.

As a reminder, the German marque was originally aiming to, like many other automakers, become an electric vehicle-only company by 2030. However, in a report by Australian publication carsales, the Stuttgart-based brand said it will continue offering products powered by internal combustion engines — whether petrol or diesel, or both — in several countries long after the turn of the new decade, while introducing new ICE-powered models three years earlier.

The information recently shared by Källenius once again supports this statement. In the interview, Källenius said he expects ICE technology will remain relevant after 2030. However, a fair bet would be that the upcoming range of newly-developed petrol and diesel powertrains will, just like the new C63 S E Performance, incorporate, to an extent, hybrid technology.

In addition, whereas the most significant sum (although an exact figure hasn’t been shared) of this investment will go towards developing new petrols and diesels, a large part of it has been set aside for the revised, petrol-powered S-Class.

It is worth noting, however, that the firm hasn’t shelved its transition to a fully electric line-up of vehicles. The automaker has just moved the initial date by a decade. According to carsales, Källenius has mentioned that the Three-pointed Star brand is dedicated to becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2024.
