While many automakers have backtracked on electrification goals amidst dwindling customer demand, others are still moving ahead with electrification strategies. By early 2025, several Suzuki models will be phased out, including the sporty Swift Sport hot hatch, the utilitarian Jimny LCV (a light commercial version of the iconic off-roader), the funky and affordable Ignis subcompact crossover, and the Swace station wagon (offered in other markets). This prioritizes hybrids and EVs in Suzuki’s lineup, with existing hybrid versions of the Swift, Vitara, S-Cross, and Across remaining available.

Dale Wyatt, Director of the Japanese automaker in GB, explained, “We’re exiting the ICE era with a focus on SUVs and the new Swift, and then starting in the second half of 2025 we’ll begin a period of EV growth.” While the announcement is specific to the UK and Europe, South Africa could see similar shifts. Stricter emission regulations are on the horizon, and Suzuki will need to adapt its offerings to comply.

The future for the manufacturer is electric. Their first fully electric vehicle arrives later in 2025, with a wave of battery-powered models to follow by 2030. This aligns with the global push for sustainable transportation and will likely influence Suzuki’s South African strategy in the coming years. While details specific to South Africa are missing from the announcement and are yet to be provided to CAR Magazine, it will be interesting to see how Suzuki tailors its strategy for our market, considering factors like consumer preferences and existing infrastructure for EVs.
